An Open Letter
to the President
of the United States
Dear Mr. President,
As you are
certainly most painfully aware, the State of Israel is presently under siege
by terrorists from within and by the constant threat of invasion from all of
its neighbors.
Those who are
actively threatening the existence of the Israeli state have made it
perfectly clear that there will be no peace in the Middle East as long as
there are any children of Jacob living anywhere within the region — that the
goal from which there can be no compromise is nothing less than the total
destruction of the State of Israel and the removal of all Jews from the
Middle East. The openly-stated goal of the Islamic world is precisely the
same as that of Nazi Germany — the “Final Solution” to the world’s problems
is the elimination of the Jews. Why cannot we as a nation force ourselves to
believe that they mean exactly what they say?
Here within our
United States, we hold as self-evident our right to exist as a nation, to be
secure within our borders, and to be free from the threat of terrorism from
within and from without. I submit as evidence the recent events at Oklahoma
City, Ruby Ridge, and Waco.
Our Government’s
obvious official policy is that even the slightest threat of terrorism
against the United States will not be tolerated, and that our response to
acts of terrorism will be swift and decisive.
When the interests
of the United States were threatened by Iraq and Libya, there was no
hesitation to take appropriate military action. If the P.L.O. had claimed
credit for the Oklahoma City bombing, the United States would not have
hesitated to ensure that they would not be able to repeat the act on any
other U.S. city — and we would have done so by any and all means necessary.
That being the
case, I am forced to ask you why the official policy of the United States
should be to deny that same right of self-protection to the Nation of Israel.
Sir, I can not even
begin to imagine the incredible chess game that you must be forced to play to
ensure the protection of U.S. interests around the world. Within the overall
picture, the fate of little Israel must seem almost insignificant.
As you have
publicly professed to believe that the Bible is the Word of G-d, may I
respectfully remind you that the G-d of the Bible has promised that He will
judge all the nations of the world by how they treat Israel? If we believe
that any part of the Bible is true, we must certainly believe that promise to
also be true.
We must also
believe that the G-d of the Bible has said to Israel, “I will bless those who
bless you, and I will curse him who curses you. In you will all of the
families of the earth be blessed. … I will give this land to your seed.”
(Genesis 12:1-3,7)
Through the Prophet
Isaiah, G-d told Israel: “‘In righteousness shall you be established: you
shall be far from oppression, for you shall not be afraid; and from terror,
for it shall not come near you. Behold, they may gather together, but not by
Me: whoever shall gather together against you shall fall because of you.
Behold, I have created the smith who blows the fire of coals, and brings
forth a weapon for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy. No
weapon that is formed against you shall prosper; and every tongue that shall
rise against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the
servants of the LORD, and their righteousness which is of Me,’ says the
LORD.” (Isaiah 54:14-17)
Mr. President, the
G-d of the Bible has blessed our great nation far beyond anything that we
have deserved. But I submit to you that His blessing on us will most
certainly be withdrawn if we fail to properly support His chosen nation of
Israel. We need to demonstrate to the nations of the world in no uncertain
terms that the United States of America stands in support of the Nation of
Israel.
A most excellent
beginning point would be the relocation of our embassy in Israel to their
capital city of Jerusalem. Are not our embassies generally located in the
capital cities of other nations? Why should Israel be any different?
Sir, I urge you in
the strongest possible terms that our nation absolutely must lend our total
and unreserved support to Israel, to her right to exist as a sovereign state,
and to her right to defend herself from all attacks, whether from within her
borders or from without.
Thank you so very
much for taking your valuable time to consider my thoughts on this subject. I
pray daily for our G-d to protect you and to give you His wisdom as you face
the many challenges of the office to which He has appointed you.
Sincerely,
Dr. Rickard L. Sawyer
